The course aims to inform healthcare practitioners how to avoid claims due to medical negligence by explaining the doctor-patient contractual relationship, the doctor's duty under delict law, and the courts' negligence test, using case law to illustrate practical applications and judicial decisions on alleged negligence.


Course Presenter: Prof Magda Slabbert

Prof Slabbert is a full professor at the University of South Africa. She has been teaching professional ethics for the past 16 years. She is an advocate of the High Court of South Africa and an accredited mediator. She is a founder member of SATiBA (South African Tissue Bank Association) and has been the chairperson of SAMLA (South African Medico-legal Association) for three years. She has been teaching medical law for the Law Society for the past eight years. She is also an elected trustee of the Bestmed Medical Aid Scheme. She has published numerous articles in accredited law journals in the field of medical law.
